(Ottawa, Canada - November 21, 2002) Though Telemanagement World in Las Vegas, held the week of October 28-31, did not drawn the attendance it has in previous years it still remains an important event for vendors and service providers as they involve themselves in TMF's technical work. Two of the major areas of importance to the Telecom market are; NGOSS, the TMF framework for the support of integrated OSS solutions; and its complementary forum OSS/J, and alliance of vendors and developers who are currently working on API's based on J2EE.
At the event, Eftia's Alain Lemoine, NGOSS compliance editor, presented to a well-attended panel session on NGOSS Compliance Testing - Strategy and Practical Experiences. The panel's objective was to demonstrate how the capacity to determine product compliance greatly enhances NGOSS. The suite of presentations explained the process of compliance: the architectural principles tested for compliance, the test information models, the testing procedures and algorithms, the testing tools, and the compliance reports. Details of the framework used for NGOSS Compliance and mapping compliance strategies to NGOSS artifacts were also addressed and case studies of NGOSS Compliance testing, applied to both catalyst projects and commercial solutions, were presented.
Eftia's presentation dealt specially with Making NGOSS Real. NGOSS's visibility can only be improved by having commercial products and solutions advertised with regard to the extent they comply to the different NGOSS artifacts, including eTOM, SIM, SID as well as NGOSS architectural principles and requirements. As such, the Eftia presentation focused on describing the NGOSS Compliance framework. A matrix showing different types of artifacts was presented along with the associated strategies to determine compliance. Concrete examples were then given of how determining the compliance rating for different products, with respect to this matrix, helps reduce the integration tax and achieving NGOSS goals.
While at the event, Mr. Lemoine also spent time meeting with the SID (Shared Information and Data Model) team and the NGOSS architecture team, to plan the next stages in the NGOSS compliance program. This provided Eftia with a good opportunity to judge the advancement of these different initiatives and bring back the best practices defined by these guideline to Eftia's product development.
Meetings with Satyam (System Integrator primarily based in India) were conducted to discuss the creation of an NGOSS catalogue of compliant products and solutions. The idea behind this is to aid SI's in the selection of compliant product on which to build their solutions. This has significant value for Eftia as our new product is designed with the NGOSS principles in mind. Renewed talks also occurred to have Saytam put onto the OSS/J Board to help with the creation of Discovery API. As this API complements the Inventory API that Eftia is actively participating in, to put back into our new product, it is important to resolve the Discovery aspect in the standard approach as this would help move forward Eftia's current efforts.
A presentation on alignment of OSS/J and NGOSS (The Ties That Bind OSS/J and NGOSS) clarified to the press and public that there is no competition between the two. Instead it demonstrated common goals between both forums. OSS through JavaTM defines a multi-tier architecture, based on reusable components with open, interoperable APIs and is a real-life implementation of NGOSS principles. The panel session consisted of presentations by IT professionals knowledgeable in NGOSS and OSS/J who are dedicated to making NGOSS real. "OSS through JavaTM, Inception to Maintenance to Fast Track NGOSS Compliance", presented by Alain Lemoine of Eftia, and Melody Khair of Digital Fairway showed how the OSS through Java (OSS/J) Initiative has brought forth a set of APIs and has defined a certification process relying on automated tests. Their presentation gave details on how products can be certified as NGOSS compliant which facilitates a strong convergence between the OSS/J architecture and the NGOSS core principles.
Finally Eftia participated in the TMF annual meeting to members where the TMF board demonstrated that its composition fell in line with the vote Eftia cast to see a strong OSS/J presence within its ranks. As TMF continues to influence the telecom market Eftia's participation will put us in a good position to play an active part in the direction of the emerging market.
